Rhetorical Analysis Cover Letter
My target audience for my RAE is other artists, poets and creators and speakers of Patois and other English dialects. For me, Jamila Lysicott’s message was a very important one to dissect and expand upon. It was interesting because at first, I was just listening to it out of obligation for class. But after hearing the speech over and over and having to zero in on specific parts of what she was saying, it felt like my perspective on it had broadened. In my RAE I made sure to provide a greater amount of evidence to support Lysicott’s messages to show how her words have touched, moved and inspired myself. I felt as though I completely related to what Lysicott was saying to the point where not only did I gain confidence in my own English-speaking capabilities, but it also inspired me to get back into poetry.
Therefore, one of the most meaningful insights that I’ve gained is that people are putting content out into the world to spread an important message. Poetry for me has always been a way to get my hardest feelings to verbalize into a form of communication. It gives me the freedom to play with and rhyme words that probably shouldn’t go in the same sentence. I’ve begun to notice rhyming lyrics in songs that I listen to on a regular. Some songs I even research the lyrics and read them as I’m listening to the song and I receive the artist’s messages so clearly. It’s given me inspiration to write poetry on some of the topics that I hear other’s speaking on. It gives me confidence to know that if I wanted to, I could possibly one day become not just a great poet but even a songwriter perhaps.
For this phase the concept that most impacted my learning was purpose. Having purpose, I feel is so essential for daily living, whether your purpose is to become rich, to find love, to heal others, purpose is what gives us reason for doing what we do. The purpose of reaching out and healing others on a larger scale is one of my goals and I’ve always wondered how that was going to happen. I see now that one way would be putting content out into the world with a message regarding healing oneself and having the purpose of wanting to heal others just lights a bright flame in my spirit. I think it’s so important for us to get back in touch with the things that touch, move and inspire us daily. We get so lost in our day-to-day interactions with work and school and other responsibilities that we rarely take the time to do things we enjoy such as writing poetry or reading or engaging in a hobby we thoroughly enjoy but keep telling ourselves there’s not enough time for it. But it just lets me know that we must find our purpose, and maybe not even our grand overall life purpose, but smaller daily purposes such as setting time aside to write, or dream or create. I reiterate that having a purpose is so inspiring, even if the purpose is small to others, you get to decide how big or small it is for yourself.
Phase 2 has definitely helped me achieve the ability to explore and analyze many genres of literature including poetry and songs. Before, I would listen to music mostly for the beats and rhythms but have now adopted the habit of listening more for the message the author is trying to convey in their music or literature. I’ve begun to print out song lyrics and read through them as I’m listening to gain a better feeling of the artist’s messages and emotions they may have been feeling.
